Volunteers Spring into Action Ahead of Easter Fun
TODAY
In my absence today, I am very grateful for Sonia overseeing the volunteering session supported by Allan and to Kevin for drafting the following description of events. Thank you.
Can I also remind everyone of the upcoming event on Saturday of the children's Easter Egg Hunt in the park. As in previous years this should be a great event for the children. Please see the posters in the park for more details.
Here is Kevin's report:
After the last two weeks of sun, it was slightly cooler today. But this did not deter the turnout of 25 volunteers. These included two new volunteers, Thahn and Tai. We were also joined by Andrei from Booking.com. Allan and Sonia had put all the tools and equipment out, so they had an early start!
These were the jobs that the volunteers did today.
Wild Flower Meadow
After Allan had done such a good job on strimming the newly growing grass. We sowed a large amount of summer flowering seeds. Hopefully, these will overwhelm the grasses that dominated last year. We have put in a lot of work on this part of the park and we hope it is successful.
Heavy Gang
This team spent most of the morning doing preparing for the installation of a new bench on the Wilmslow Road path.
Wilmslow Road
A small team continued to tidy this area and removed a large amount of tree and plant debris that had accumulated along the walls.
Sandhurst Road entrance
This part of the Flower Walk had been completely dominated by a large amount of Alkanet. This is very invasive and can crowd out other plants, so we decided to remove it. It is difficult to remove because it has very long roots. It was great to see that another team managed to do a great job of removing these plants and the area looked great at the end of the morning.
Watering
Because of the dry weather we watered many of the new plants that were starting to suffer from dehydration. We also watered the new willow "Fedge" around Buddy and Lucy. It was great to see that the whips were starting to sprout new growth.
General tidying
Several groups of volunteers continued to tidy the flower beds, more weeding! Other tidied the edging of the paths. At the end of the session these areas were looking great.
Other work
Other members of the group prepared a cricket wicket on the sports field. Others continued to work on the managed woodland area. They continued to build natural fences and make preparations for making new "bug hotels". Finally, the work on repainting the kick fencing at the Poppy Path was completed.
Thanks as usual for all your support in maintaining our park.
