A Chilly Morning of Hard Work in the Park
Once again I am indebted to Kevin for drafting this week's update in my absence, Thank you Kevin. Thank you also to Sonia supported by Allan for organising the jobs today and having all the tools and equipment ready before any volunteers arrived.
These were the jobs that our volunteers undertook today:
TODAY:
Following our recent spell of lovely weather I am afraid our Manchester Bank Holiday weather turned against us today. It was very chilly and drizzly when an outstanding team of 20 enthusiastic volunteers arrived at the park. But they didn't let the weather dampen their spirits; instead, they rolled up their sleeves and made amazing progress this morning!
Area around the volunteer's shelter
The team worked together to clear and tidy up the paths and flower beds around the volunteer's shelter. This area of the park sees a lot of visitors, and it looked so much better by the end of the morning!
Heavy gang
A smaller group from the heavy gang was busy getting the new benches ready along the Wilmslow Road path. These benches will be an excellent addition since this path is quite a long walk from the road to the park, offering nice spots for a relaxing rest.
Flower walk
A few volunteers continued with the never-ending task of weeding the Flower Walk. This is the largest flower bed in the park, and the team is constantly managing incursions of Alkanet, Bindweed, and Ground Elder. The good news is that the bed still looks great as the spring plants come through.
Cricket and football pItches
The cricket wicket team mowed and marked out the cricket wicket. It was great to see several groups of children use this extensively over the weekend. However, rain certainly stopped play today! They also repaired the damaged goal nets which had been damaged over the weekend.
General tidying
The last group of volunteers spent some time tidying up the park. This essential task should be done every week, and their efforts greatly improved the park.
Wildflower meadow
It was wonderful to see the wildflowers starting to bloom! The sun brought out some beautiful large patches of flowers over the weekend. Unfortunately, the weather is keeping them hidden today. But we’ll post a picture of them next week once the rain clears up!
Thanks, as usual, for all your support in maintaining our park.
